Vegan Beauty Brands You Need To Know About

When it comes to the world of beauty, deciphering its jargon can be a minefield. However, unlike terms such as ‘clean’ and ‘green’, there is a hard and fast definition for vegan beauty that leaves no room for confusion –  it’s the complete absence of animal ingredients, animal by-products, or any other animal-derived ingredients.

Be sure to distinguish this from ‘cruelty-free’ which applies to a product not tested on animals but still with the capacity to be made from them, and ‘vegetarian’ beauty, which may still contain animal by-products such as honey. The safest bet is to cast your eyes over the full ingredient list looking out for animal products hiding behind chemical names, such as gelatin (boiled bones and ligaments), shark squalene (shark liver oil), lanolin (wool oil), carmine (crushed insects), and ambergris (whale vomit. Yes, really.). Alternatively, look for a logo certification such as the Leaping Bunny Program, the Vegan Society or PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies.

To help you on your hunt, we have rounded up our favourite vegan-friendly brands that are kind to animals, the environment and our skin:

Sparitual

Sparitual is a sustainable body care and nail polish brand that celebrates the ritual of self-care. Certified by PETA and the Leaping Bunny Program, it is 100% vegan and cruelty-free and made from organic plant essences without artificial colouring and synthetic dyes.

2020 has made Sparitual’s Hand Sanitiser a staple addition to our handbag, whilst other Talia Collective favourites include its wonderfully-rich Body Salve and Nourishing Vegan Nail Colour. Some might know that Shellac is made from the secretions of the Southeast Asian Lac Beetle, making it unsuitable for vegans, so we’re delighted to have Spiritual’s range of vegan nail colours – all 79 of them!

Irene Forte Skincare

The idea for Irene Forte Skincare came to its founder as she wandered among the ancient olive and orange groves in Sicily and realised that its organic produce would make the perfect base for a skincare line. Although not officially certified, the 33-strong range that Irene has since developed is 100% vegan as well as sustainable and organic, made from ethically-farmed Sicilian ingredients with time-honoured techniques. It is currently seeking official vegan accreditation and has already been recognised by Positive Luxury for its sustainable excellence.

Its Hyaluronic Acid Vials are a godsend for mature or dry skin and the perfect size to take on a long-haul flight. Made from the plant-derived variety of hyaluronic acid extracted from microbial fermentation (as opposed to the animal-derived variety which comes from the comb of a rooster), it delivers a dose of hydration and plumping and works best when combined with its ultra-moisturising Hibiscus Serum.

Adesso Beauty

Launched in 2020 by three Italian sisters, Adesso Beauty ticks both the vegan and cruelty-free boxes with its range of skincare. Whilst not certified by an official vegan standard this is hopefully soon to come, with products made from the highest-quality natural ingredients without an allergen or animal-derivative in sight!

The brand was conceived after the sisters noticed a gap in the market for quality products that delivered results without the lengthy routine. Its Rebalancing Micellar Gel is a perfect example of this being both a cleanser and a make-up remover, with hamamelis leaf water and pro-vitamin b5 to give it deeply moisturising properties as well! Adesso Beauty also has a giveback culture and donates 1% of the company’s turnover to the environmental association “1% for the planet.”

Baiobay

Baiobay uses the natural healing properties of coconut oil as the base of its vegan skincare formulas. All products are certified Natural & Organic by Cosmos Ecocert and its compositions achieve a pristine Yuka score of 100/100. Its small but perfectly-formed range includes a Face & Lips Exfoliating Scrub, a Hydrating Gel Cream and an Organic Coconut Oil, whose virgin, cold-pressed oil is perfect for nourishing hair, face and body.

The French company also pays great care to reducing its environmental impact and all packaging is made from recyclable or compostable materials. On top of that, Baiobay joins Adesso in donating 1% of its revenue to the environmental organisation 1% For The Planet and plants a tree for every product purchased.

Tata Harper

Colombian-born Tata Harper created her skincare brand of the same name to deliver professional results without the toxic ingredients – something she felt wasn’t readily available on the market. Made from 100% natural and organic ingredients sourced from her farm in Vermont, her range has enchanted the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Jourdan Dunn .

The brand is proudly cruelty-free and almost vegan, with a handful of products containing beeswax, honey or carmine (which you can check for on the products’ full ingredient lists). Our vegan favourites are the Concentrated Brightening Serum which is packed with 69 high-performance ingredients and a miracle-worker for dull, tired skin, and its Regenerating Cleanser, with apricot and white willow bark for a radiant glow. Tata Harper also uses predominantly glass packaging alongside vegetable-based inks and sustainable-certified paper.

Milanesi Skincare

Milanesi Skincare uses 100% natural and vegan formulas to protect skin from modern-day aggressors such as stress, pollution and blue light. It follows a ‘0 km’ ingredient strategy wherever possible with many products sourced from local Milanese soil, such as the coffee found in its Purifying Eye Treatment, roasted right in the heart of the neighbourhood, and its antioxidant-rich Saffron used in its Illuminating Moisturiser, grown in a small field on the outskirts of Milan.

The remainder of ingredients are sourced from nearby Italian artisans including one of its star ingredient, Gold, which is produced by a historic company in Florentine. The ultimate indulgence, gold is known for its ability to repair and enhance skin texture and luminosity which makes it popular in anti-aging products, including Milanesi’s potent Anti-Aging Serum.

Malin + Goetz

Uncomplicating your skin regime is Malin + Goetz’s mission. Its easy-to-use products strive to use as few ingredients as possible and are 100% cruelty-free as certified by PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies. The majority of its products are also vegan, with our favourites being the Vitamin E Face Moisturiser which provides a layer of protection from pesky air pollution, and the Eucalyptus Deodorant, which is packed with refreshing natural eucalyptus extract and odour-neutralising citronellyl.

Founded and made entirely in New York, the company is passionate about providing non-toxic, natural products with minimal impact and is always looking at innovative ways to cut waste. In 2021, this will include the use of more recycled materials and packaging will be even further reduced.

MYEVOOSKIN

Italian-made MYEVOOSKIN combines the ancient art of olive milling with innovative and sustainable technologies to create vitamin-packed products for skin and hair. Entirely vegan, they contain the highest percentage of pure olive oil on the market, ranging from 15% for hair to 70% for face and 98% for body, sourced from the family’s own farm in Tuscany.

Its leading products include its Nectar Daily 70, an antioxidant-rich oil that nourishes the skin without leaving it greasy, and its Eleiva Hair 15, whose perfectly-balanced formula penetrates deeply to make hair soft and bright.
